Booked AUS–AMS roundtrip in Delta One for $5,923.
Now I want to extend and fly Dublin–Austin instead of Amsterdam–Austin on the return. Figured I’d cancel the AMS–AUS leg, use the credit toward DUB–AUS, and just buy a cheap one way from Amsterdam to Dublin.
Simple, right?
Chat rep quoted me $14,000 to switch the return to DUB–AUS.
So I asked what happens if I just cancel the AMS–AUS portion. They told me I would owe Delta $7,111. Yes, owe them. To cancel half of a ticket that cost $5,900 total.
The explanation was basically “supply and demand.”
I get fare rules and repricing, but how does it make sense that canceling half the trip costs more than the entire ticket? That feels completely insane.
Has anyone dealt with this kind of repricing before?
