Spirit canceled us but gave hotel + $40 food + $100 credit… normal?

Honestly, that’s a pretty solid outcome by Spirit standards.

If they gave:

Hotel

Meal voucher

Rebooked you next morning

$100 future flight credit

That usually points to a controllable cancellation (crew, maintenance, aircraft rotation), not weather. When it’s weather, they typically don’t hand out hotel rooms or extra credits.

The $40 food voucher is pretty standard. The $100 credit feels more like a goodwill add on.

As for finding the reason:

Check FlightAware history for your flight number that day.

Look at where the inbound aircraft was coming from and whether it was delayed earlier.

Sometimes the gate agents will note “crew” or “maintenance” in the delay codes, but that’s not always visible publicly.

All in all, for a cancellation that could’ve been way worse, you kind of hit the best case scenario.
