Bought a ticket for my 18 year old son to fly back to college after winter break. His MSP to GFK connection was oversold by two seats. Gate agent asked for volunteers and offered $600 in credit.
My son volunteered right away. He had a friend in MSP who picked him up and drove him to Grand Forks instead, so it worked out fine logistically.
The problem is the $600 credit never showed up. He submitted a feedback claim and got back what feels like a copy paste, AI style response saying he’s not eligible because he “was not at the gate to board the flight.”
That’s simply not true. He was at the gate, heard the announcement, and volunteered. Another passenger also volunteered at the same time. Delta’s response says there was no denied boarding compensation issued on the flight, which makes zero sense since they were actively asking for volunteers.
Lesson learned, I told him to never give up a seat again without something in writing from the gate agent. But right now, is there anything we can do to make Delta honor what they promised? Escalation paths, DOT complaint, anything that actually works?
This feels like they’re just hoping people give up.
