I’ve heard this story so many times, and it still blows my mind that gate agents say it’s illegal. It’s not. You didn’t break any law by getting off in Charlotte, especially with a legit reason like your wife being sick.
What they usually mean is it breaks airline rules, not the law. Airlines hate people skipping legs because it messes with their pricing model. That’s it. No cops. No fines. Just angry airline employees and maybe a warning that the rest of your ticket could be canceled.
I’ve done this once before myself, and nothing happened other than some side eye. As long as you’re not checking bags and not doing it repeatedly, it’s usually a non issue.
Illegal? Nope. Against airline policy sometimes? Yeah. Big difference.
