We’ve reached Princess Elite status over the years, and these are some of the things we’ve learned from cruising a lot.
One big tip is to arrive at the port city a day or two early so travel delays don’t ruin the start of the trip. It also helps to stay loyal to a hotel brand or cruise line so you can build up rewards.
On embarkation day, go to the main dining room for lunch instead of the buffet. It’s usually less crowded and the service is better.
It’s also a good idea to introduce yourself to your room steward early and learn their name. They work very hard, and I often give a small tip early in the cruise if they help with something on the first day.
Do the muster drill as soon as possible so you can relax afterward and actually start your vacation.
Basic hygiene helps a lot on cruises too. Wash your hands often, especially before going to the buffet, and try to use your cabin bathroom when possible.
For elevators, let people get off before getting on. If it’s only a couple floors, taking the stairs helps avoid the crowds. Also try to be considerate of passengers using scooters who may have been waiting longer.
Learning the names of bartenders, waiters, and staff can make a big difference. Ask where they’re from and be friendly. I’ve noticed I often get faster service when staff recognize me.
Try to visit the service desk early in the cruise when it’s quiet, and check your onboard bill a few times during the trip instead of waiting until the last day.
It’s also common to tip the luggage porters at the cruise terminal when you drop off your bags.
I like to take photos of staff name tags so I can leave positive feedback for them later. Sometimes I also bring small gifts like a baseball cap or T-shirt from my hometown team for crew members who go above and beyond.
Be patient with other passengers too. Many cruisers are older, so a little courtesy goes a long way.
Midway through the cruise I sometimes leave a thank-you note and a small treat for the steward.
If you can handle your own luggage and have an early flight, self-disembarkation can save a lot of time since you avoid the lines.
