First time cruising and this threw us off a bit.
We knew Virgin doesn’t do onboard tipping, so we didn’t bring a bunch of small bills. Just had some $20s. When we handed our bag to the porter, he said something like “now is the time to tip me,” in a way that felt less optional and more required.
Normally we’d toss a few bucks without thinking. But all we had were 20s and it felt excessive for small bags. The tone also made us uncomfortable, like if we didn’t tip we might not see the bag again.
We ended up just taking our luggage back and carrying it on ourselves.
Later we learned they’re port employees, not Virgin staff, which makes more sense. Just caught us off guard as first time cruisers. Next time we’ll bring smaller bills.
Still felt kind of awkward.
