My wife and I have a one-month break coming up (mid-September to mid-October) and we’re trying to pick a home base for a longer stay. Italy is the front-runner right now, with Tuscany as the leading candidate, but Greece has come up too and we’re open to other places if there’s a better fit.
Big factor: we’ll have an 11-month-old and a 3-year-old with us. We’ve traveled a lot, but we’re trying to keep this realistic with little kids (so stuff like SE Asia/Angkor Wat is probably a future trip).
What we’re thinking so far:
A few days on either end in a bigger hub (likely Rome, but open)
Then ~3 weeks in one rental as a home base (day trips from there)
We’re fine mixing public transit + a rental car depending on where we stay
We prefer walks/hikes/mountains over beach time, but a good “easy” beach nearby could still be nice
We’d love a place where we can do a daily walk without needing a car every time, either trails or a town with small markets/cafes
In cities we’re mostly food + museums, not shopping
We don’t speak Italian, but we do speak Spanish and have done plenty of international travel, so we’re not too worried about logistics
If you’ve done a similar “one place for 3 weeks” trip with young kids, where in Italy worked best for you and why? And if you’d steer us toward Greece or somewhere else entirely for this time of year, I’d love to hear the pros/cons.
