Came back through ORD and was surprised that I never had to hand over my passport at all. They just took a facial recognition photo and waved me through. I’m a US citizen traveling with a non citizen spouse, and she still had the usual passport scan and quick interview, but I didn’t get asked for anything.
Makes me wonder if the newer passports are getting picked up through RFID or if the system just pulls your info automatically once it matches your face. Either way it felt a little strange walking through without ever opening my passport.
