Miles refunded first instead of cash, now close to expiring

Looking for advice on this.

Back in August I paid for seat selection on my JFK–SIN–XXX and SIN–JFK–XXX flights using a mix of cash and KrisFlyer miles. Total was USD 319.20, made up of USD 267.09 plus 6,700 miles. Those miles were set to expire on Jan 31, 2026.

This week I was told I had to change my schedule due to Singapore airspace closures for the airshow. As a result, my seat selection on the first leg (USD 159.20) was cancelled and refunded.

The issue is that instead of refunding the cash portion, Singapore Airlines refunded the miles first. That refund was USD 107.49 plus the 6,700 miles, and now those miles are expiring in less than two weeks.

Is there any way to get the miles validity extended without paying extra, or to push for the refund to be returned in cash instead? It feels pretty sneaky to refund the expiring currency first when this change wasn’t initiated by me.
