I’ve bounced between both, and honestly you’re not crazy. Hyatt points really are just worth more.

Main reason people still choose Hilton is footprint and convenience. There are Hiltons everywhere. Small towns, airports, random suburbs. Hyatt just doesn’t compete there. If you travel a lot for work or last minute stuff, Hilton is easier to use without thinking.

But purely on points value? Hyatt wins. No contest.

Hyatt points are basically 2x to 3x more valuable than Hilton points. Hilton hands points out like candy, so the redemption numbers look huge. Hyatt earns slower, but burns way slower too.

Another big thing is elite benefits. Hyatt Globalist is actually meaningful. Free breakfast, lounge access, real suite upgrades, waived resort fees on award stays. Hilton Diamond is fine, but it feels watered down since so many people have it via credit cards.

The “standard room” thing you noticed is also a Hyatt strength. They’re stricter about what counts as standard, but if it’s available, you can usually book it for the same points regardless of cash rate. Hilton pricing floats all over the place.

What you’re missing isn’t a catch, it’s just tradeoffs:

Hyatt = better value, better perks, fewer hotels

Hilton = more hotels, easier earning, weaker redemptions

If you’re doing planned trips, leisure travel, or treating parents, Hyatt makes a ton of sense. If you’re just trying to always have something nearby, Hilton is safer.

I still keep both, but if I had to earn points from scratch today, I’d probably pick Hyatt first.
