Is Italy actually hostile toward Black travelers?

I’ve always wanted to visit Italy for the history, food, and culture, but I keep hesitating because of things I read online.

I’ve seen posts and warnings saying Black travelers should avoid Italy, Japan, and parts of Eastern Europe because of racism or not being welcome. As a Black man, I don’t want to spend money and PTO somewhere I’ll feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

I know the internet can exaggerate, so I’m trying to get real world perspectives. Has anyone here traveled to Italy as a Black traveler, or traveled with Black friends or family, and can share what it was actually like?

Just looking for honest experiences, good or bad.
