I Paid $24 for a Pizza and Learned My Lesson

I’ve always been a pizza lover, but last weekend I wandered into a Papa Johns without a coupon and walked out $24 lighter for a single large with The Works. Don’t get me wrong it was fine. The crust was soft, the toppings were fresh enough, and I used every drop of the garlic sauce. But halfway through my second slice, I couldn’t help thinking I could’ve gotten the same satisfaction from a $10 pie down the street.

Over the past year, I’ve noticed a lot of big-name pizza spots doing the same thing: charging steakhouse prices for what used to be comfort food. I’ve tried Pizza Hut at $23 for a Super Supreme, Blaze with its $20 “build-your-own” pies, and Jet’s deep dish that set me back $21 for one topping. Sometimes the flavor makes up for it but a lot of the time, it doesn’t.

Now, when I’m craving pizza, I’m more likely to hit a local shop or watch for deals online. Because as good as chain pizza can be, paying luxury prices for a takeout box just isn’t the move anymore.
