Wanted to share a success story because I know how hopeless this situation can feel.
I was flying Austin to India on Lufthansa with an Indian passport and a valid Advance Parole. My US visa was expired, and due to transit visa rules they denied me boarding. Messy, but things got way worse after that.
Because AUS doesn’t have a Lufthansa ticketing desk, airport staff told me I had to call customer service to rebook. While I was literally standing at the check in counter trying to call, the flight departed and Lufthansa’s system automatically marked me as a “no show.”
From that moment on, Lufthansa refused to help. No rebooking, no refund, nothing. Phone support just saw “no show” and shut the conversation down. They tried to keep my entire non refundable business class fare.
What finally worked:
Filed a DOT complaint immediately
Lufthansa doesn’t care about BBB, but the DOT forced their legal team to review my case. In their official response to the DOT, Lufthansa actually admitted I was at the airport and that their system automatically marks passengers as “no show” even when boarding is denied. This was huge and totally different from what customer service told me.
Collected proof I was physically at the airport
Uber receipts, Google Maps timeline, a baggage cart receipt, and screenshots of my call logs showing I was on the phone with Lufthansa while the flight was still at the gate.
Filed a credit card dispute for “services not rendered”
I submitted the DOT response plus all my proof. Lufthansa tried to offer a small $300 goodwill payment. I refused. If you accept a partial refund, it can kill your dispute.
The credit card company escalated it to Visa on their own. Lufthansa sent a long document about their policies. In the end, the bank sided with me and I got a full refund.
Key takeaways:
Don’t waste time arguing with phone agents once you’re marked no show
File a DOT complaint early
Document everything proving you were at the airport
Do not accept partial “goodwill” offers
Even if EU261 doesn’t apply, you can still win
If you’re denied boarding and wrongly marked no show, it’s absolutely fightable with the right paper trail.
