Frontier delay made me miss my connection. Refunded ticket, but replacement flight cost 3x. Any recourse?

Had a Frontier itinerary yesterday: Ontario, CA to Las Vegas to St. Louis, both Frontier flights.

First flight was delayed due to Frontier maintenance. At the gate they told me I’d miss my connection and that the second flight would not be held. My options were to wait 48 hours for the next Frontier flight or take a refund.

I asked about hotel, meal, or transport vouchers and was told no. After pushing, they said I’d get meal vouchers by email, which never showed up.

I canceled and did get a refund for the Frontier ticket, but I still had to get home. Ended up buying a last minute flight on another airline for almost 3x the price and spent about 9 hours stuck at LAX.

I know US airlines aren’t required to cover hotels or meals, but since this was a Frontier caused maintenance delay, I’m wondering if I have any realistic options to recover the extra cost.

DOT complaint? Credit card or travel insurance? Small claims? Or is this just “welcome to Frontier”?

Would love to hear if anyone’s had luck getting anything beyond a refund in a situation like this.
