This one caught me off guard today. I usually bring a small duffle as my carry on plus a personal item. It’s the same size or smaller than most roller bags, and honestly I do it to avoid getting gate checked.
Today I put my personal item under the seat and went to put my duffle in the overhead. FA told me they needed to save the bins for roller bags only. Flight was maybe half full and I was the last to board.
Before I could explain, she walked away. I put the bag up anyway, and she came back down the aisle pretty heated saying I wasn’t listening. She told me I had to wait until the doors closed before using overhead space and that I might have to hold my duffle in case roller bags needed the space, and possibly check it later.
I usually avoid any confrontation onboard, but this felt really odd. I’ve flown JetBlue four times this week with the exact same setup and had zero issues until today.
Is this actually a rule now or just crew discretion? I always thought overhead space was first come first serve.
