Booking host canceled my Shibuya stay and now Booking is backing out

Booked an apartment in Shibuya for two weeks and prepaid. Price was insanely good, €900, which should’ve been my first warning I guess. Host sent welcome messages, everything looked fine, then a few days later said the place is suddenly unavailable due to maintenance.


I contacted Booking support and they called me saying they’d find something similar or upgrade me if needed. That made me feel better. But now I just got an email saying they’ll refund me and telling me to search for a new place on my own.


That’s not what they told me on the phone, and prices in that area have exploded since then. What was €900 is now closer to €2900 for way worse options. I’m worried they’re just washing their hands of it.


Has anyone dealt with this and actually gotten Booking to honor the replacement or upgrade they promised?
