Aircraft swap and now BA wants to charge again for seats we already had?

We booked MIA–LHR roundtrip back in June 2025 for May 2026. Outbound on AA, return on BA. Premium Economy, seats selected and confirmed at time of booking.


Recently got notified the aircraft changed on the return. After that, our seat assignments disappeared. When we tried to reselect seats online, it gave an error. Called BA and were told we’d now have to pay to pick seats again or wait until check in.


That makes zero sense since we already selected seats when we booked and didn’t have to pay anything extra at that time.


Has anyone dealt with this after an aircraft change? Shouldn’t they reassign comparable seats without charging again?
