1K but still never clearing upgrades… what’s the secret?

I’m 1K and keep trying to use PlusPoints, but I almost never clear. Meanwhile there are Polaris seats sitting there if I want to just pay cash.

Starting to feel like 1K only gets me pre boarding and not much else. And even that is barely different from Group 1.

Is there actually a strategy here? Certain routes, booking classes, timing? Or are most upgrades just going to GS and paid buy ups now?
